I think having a basic understanding of high school biology is crucial to understanding this book. It’s a good mix of horror, thriller and a bit of sci-fi. It takes real science and twists it a bit to make a fast-paced story. In fact, Eve is the one responsible for Kiyomi’s car accident in order to be transplanted into others.

The translation is solid but there are a few passages that are so matter-of-fact that they lose some of the impact or seem stilted. Refresh and try again. This book was my first foray into Japanese written horror, and overall it was an interesting one. I am a biologist who likes body horror as a subgenre of horror, so it’s basically perfect for me.

Much of Parasite Eve reads like a science textbook. The story is heavily based on science, including biology and genetics. Helping him is his lovely [ish? It allows the reader to question whether we really know everything about the human body.

I was glad when the action finally began to pick up in the last third of the book, but I came to regret my decision to continue reading when the monster rape scenes happened. Parasite Giua starts a bit slow but builds nicely. It wasn’t until the third part where, in between textbook speak, things actually happened. I’m of the parasiye the story could have done without the ‘hard’ science part, but having it ultimately didn’t take away from what was essentially a horribly gross and terrifying story and did provide some background.

And surprisingly, the video game turned out alright. I thought that was a nice touch. It’s difficult to scare others when you fear nothing; therefore, the best and most lasting horror fiction comes from societies and eras that maintain a number of taboos. It’s a slower, creepier story with some truly amazing, scary bits interwoven with scientific accuracy, which makes for some truly clever writing.
